This week, we are thrilled to share insights from our recent comprehensive network performance analysis of all three major operators (Vodafone UK, T-Mobile, O2) and one MVNO (Lebara) at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, on Sunday, July 17th.

Through these tests, our goal was to ensure that visitors and participants could depend on robust and efficient mobile connectivity throughout the event.

We used four 5G enabled devices and we focused on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as latency, download and upload speeds, voice call success rates, SMS performance, and RAN coverage.

Issues Due to Lack of Connectivity

Without adequate network connectivity, attendees at the Air Tattoo may face several challenges. Communication breakdowns can lead to difficulties in coordinating with friends and family, accessing event schedules, and navigating the venue. Emergency situations could become more dangerous if staff and visitors cannot promptly contact emergency services. Additionally, media coverage and live broadcasting of the event could suffer, limiting the global reach and impact of the airshow.

Network Operator What is Good What is Bad How is the Performance
T Mobile UK (EE)
Best Low Latency Performance
Strong download and upload speeds
Weak signal strength in many areas
Poor signal quality in some locations
Strong performance in latency and speed, but inconsistent signal strength and quality affect reliability
Vodafone UK
Highest download
Strong signal strength and quality
Moderate latency performance
Higher packet loss compared to T-Mobile
Excellent download speeds and signal quality, but higher latency and packet loss impact overall service quality.
O2 UK
Some areas of the venue have partial coverage for data and voice services, but not full coverage throughout
Poor latency, download, and upload performance
Very high packet loss
Reliance on older 3G technology
Lack of 5G coverage
Significant areas for improvement, particularly in speed, latency, and technology adoption. Inadequate for large-scale events.

Conclusion:

We understand that robust network coverage at major events like the Royal International Air Tattoo is crucial for a seamless experience. Our recent testing at RAF Fairford highlighted the importance of reliable mobile connectivity for attendees, addressing potential communication breakdowns and enhancing overall event management which brings us to connectivity.

Connectivity is crucial at events like the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), one of the largest airshows globally, drawing up to 200,000 spectators annually. Reliable network coverage ensures attendees can stay connected, access event schedules, coordinate with friends and family, and manage emergency situations effectively. It also supports live media coverage, enhancing the event's global reach.

Network operators must conduct thorough connectivity tests at RIAT to prevent potential issues. Without proper coverage, they risk communication hang-ups, which could lead to a loss of reputation and a decline in subscriber trust. Poor 4G/5G performance can prompt negative feedback and swift subscriber churn, impacting the operator’s business significantly. Operators might face substantial financial losses due to reduced customer loyalty and negative publicity.
